The Teen Grid merge is over two years old

Last month the Teen Grid Merge turned two years old.  That’s two years of 16 and 17 year olds being allowed onto General regions in Second Life to mix with adults and two years of the regions that previously made up the Teen Grid being open to all members of Second Life.

Greeting newly transferred teens on Eros

When the merge first happened, there were dire predictions of doom and gloom abounding.  The end of Second Life was said to be nigh, heralded by the coming of teens who would intrude themselves on adult areas and cause their parents to sue Linden Lab over the content they could access.  Land owners switched their regions to Adult to be absolutely safe from teenagers or moved to Zindra, the all-Adult continent that was new at the time.

Marketplace sellers upgraded the maturity ratings on their items and those who didn’t upgrade were forced into Mature and Adult categories by LL, and there was an overall sense of fear on Plurk and blogs.  The merge was going to be the end of Second Life in the minds of many. Continue reading ›

Vintage Cinema

Cinema opens tomorrow, October 13th!  If you don’t know already, Cinema is a massive movie-themed fashion event featuring major creators like Cheeky Pea, BOOM and SYSY.  I received a sample of SYSY’s offerings this morning, which included this gorgeous old Hollywood-inspired long mesh ballgown.  It comes in six colors, including blue, yellow and rose.  I’m in love.  The previews for all the creators involved have been stunning.  Be sure to check out Cinema when it opens tomorrow!

Seraphim Birthday Hunt!

Seraphim is turning a year old!

It’s hard to think that this blog has only been around for a year.  The work on it has been incredible and I’m a huge fan of their dedication to events, hunts and sales.  To celebrate, there’s a hunt going on.  A bunch of awesome stores have joined in, and each item is only 10L a pop but valued at 250L or more!  Many items are blue or purple.

Some shops in this hunt are tough, while others are incredibly easy.  Hints can be found under the click-through details of the pictures on their site, and in some places you will really need them.

First off, this furniture set.  I know I never really talk about furniture, given my ineptness when it comes to interior design, but this set is pretty awesome.  It’s from L’aize Dayz, and is a gorgeous blend of patchwork, steely blue and light wood.  There’s a bit of shabby chic going on here.  It includes everything – the couch, coffee table, lamp, tealight holder and box.  The poses are cute for males and females.

Second, this top.  It’s an adorable mesh tubetop by insanya which fits surprisingly well on me (though ever since I brought my breast slider down from 40 to 20, all mesh fits better).  The paisley-type pattern is subtle, you don’t really catch it from a distance, but it’s adorable when you see it up close.  I love how detailed the texturing is.  There’s nothing blah here, it just pops.

Is it time for camp yet?

I’m getting ready to head away to Camp Hardknock in a few days!  Camp is pretty much the best place in the world and I can’t wait to have a week to just chill out with my friends, play games and, well, be a kid.  It’s a great little mini-vacation with little contact from the outside SL, except on alts.  I plan on spending it in almost full immersion, only going on my alts when necessary (or when needing some hugs from my bestie).

Camp costs L$1,000 for a week, and there are limited spaces.  This year, about 150 kids are attending.  Everyone is divided up into cabins, and each cabin is given a color, captain and co-captain.  We pick our own name, logo and official song.  This session I’m in Cabin One, the Glowbugs, and as you can likely see, our color is yellow!

Camp is kind of awesome – people make tons of stuff just for it.  They pour their hearts and souls into their bunks which will likely only be used for that one week, bedeck themselves in their cabin color and cover themselves in the camp logo.

Since I’m actually in a cabin with a color I can stand this year, I took advantage and covered myself in yellow – nails, flip flops, necklace, shirt, everything.  All said, I spend more on getting ready for camp, buying clothing, my bunk and accessories than I do on the actual fee to get in, but it’s always worth it.

With all that spending, I try to save where I can.  My shorts are from Wolfmoon Designs and are only 10L on Marketplace.  They don’t have prim cuffs, but they cover enough to be modest on a kid av.  My shirt is from one of my favorite stores, Dream Doll.  It’s currently Marketplace-only, and everything is reduced, making a pack of pastel colored shirts 50L.  Unfortunately, they don’t come with the prim bottom, so if you want that you have to ask the designer directly for them.

I’ll try to prepare a post this week to do next week so I don’t have to work it in at camp.

Orphaned, but awesome!

Recently I moved into a new home in a bid to get myself involved with people again.  I tend to be a recluse in SL – even with a huge friends list, I never really talk to anyone.  I guess I’m just shy and have a hard time making the first move and fear my own first impression.

Anyways, I moved into Nana’s Nest, an orphanage located on Butterfly Kisses.  It’s pretty awesome because it’s no pressure – no having a panel up or having parents constantly walk through, staring at you like a fish in a glass bowl or something.  It’s just a nice place to collect my thoughts and get myself together while I consider where I’m going from here.

Plus, I love being involved with people again, having a space which is in a public area where I can talk to passer-bys and observe what’s going on around me.  I don’t have a picture of my room here, but I swear it’s super-cute!

I posed a picture in the living room wearing this great outfit from The Kid Company.  It’s still 50L, so get it while you can before the price goes up again!  (Plus, there’s a red version too).  It’s got a mesh skirt which works nicely, and the top is sculpted.

The skin is my favorite part though.  It’s an awesome sample I got from the creator of Heartsick, who is working on a new line of kids skins, her first one ever!  There’s an absolute lack of ethnic skins for kids in SL and the freckles here are just perfect.  She hasn’t said when the line will officially be released or if it’ll be part of her new store opening, but I can’t wait to see what the rest is!

The Simplist Blackness

Here’s a little bit more of my boy-alt, Gabriel.   The more I play with his appearance, the more I like it.  He’s not wearing anything special in this one, though I did do a bit of retouching to get the effects.

Blue DaBaDeeDa

Collabor88 is pretty awesome this month.  I’m digging the bright, bold reds, blues and yellows, done up in solids and large shapes.  There are very few intricate patterns this time around – virtually everything feels like it was lifted out of a nursery school and slapped onto high fashion – but in a good way.

My favorite thing in this outfit actually isn’t from the Collabor88 event – it’s the skin I’m wearing.  I’d never heard of essences before, but after trying out this skin I can’t wait to see more from them.  It fits my face perfectly – soft, yet strong, and realistic without hitting the uncanny valley.  It’s not my usual shade, but I’m more than willing to go vanilla for a while just to be able to bask in the beauty of this creation.

Off to the beach!

I’m heading off to the beach with this incredible new look from Paris Metro!

You don’t need much to enjoy a sunny day on a beach.  Slap on a little sunscreen, pull your hair back, find a nice place to go, and of course, buy an awesome bikini to go in.

I love this piece from Paris Metro, the Beaded Bikini.  This ain’t your grandma’s bikini!  It’s ultra bright in a fluorescent pink and comes with matching shades and a belt.  Not too overly modern or high fashion, but not frumpy in the least.  I think I’m in love!

The Fallen

The Fallen is a pretty epic urban fantasy-type RP.  It’s set in the city of Charm ten years after a war between God and Lucifer.  As a result of the battle, God has withdrawn from Earth and left all angels and demons stranded on it.  The sun has gone away, werewolves and vampires openly wage war on one another while the celestials prepare to fight once more.  Magic is common, though weak, and civilization is slowly attempting to rebuild itself.

The roleplay here is pretty great.  It’s mostly paragraphs, with in-depth plots between individuals and entire factions and races.  The sim staff is friendly and processed my application to join in less than a day after providing helpful feedback on how to create my character, Gabriel, who is played via my male alt.  So far I’m enjoying my time here, and it’s well worth a visit if you like urban or fantasy RP but want a twist on the typical formula.

If you’re interested, you can visit The Fallen here.

As for the clothing…  I’ve gotten a lot of help from my roleplay partners in finding good male clothing and establishing a style for my character.  When guys complain about not knowing where to go or how expensive good guys stuff is, I won’t be rolling my eyes at them anymore – it really is difficult.

Arwyn has undergone a minor shape change to fit mesh clothing better.  I’m still adjusting to it, but so far it’s working much better with not only mesh but skirts and belts in general.  I’ve always been a little too thin (and it does hurt to say that), so maybe this is a step in the right direction.
